Round & Revel / Paper folding

Fold & Reveal

Take turns shaping a square, then open the evidence.

2–8 players cooperating, with one shared sheetEstimated 20–35 minutes for three patterns

Original printable party game. Timing is a planning estimate; this edition has not had a live group playtest.

Good for: A hands-on paper challenge at a quiet, clear table.

What you need

  • Three smooth 20 cm by 20 cm paper squares, plus one practice square
  • A ruler, pencil, and a flat table clear of drinks
  • One copy of the 12 pattern cards
  • A six-box fold counter and a score sheet; a helper can prepare squares

How to play

Make a pattern through folds

A hands-on, seated gathering activity for people who want a break from talking games. Your group creates four specified crease lines in a square, taking one folding action at a time. Then you open the paper and compare the actual lines with the card. You can plan together, but a crease cannot be erased, so a helpful guide fold may have a cost. Nobody throws paper, stands on furniture, uses loads, or tests strength. Stay seated and press folds with fingertips, without sharp tools. This is a geometric construction challenge; neatness beyond the stated tolerance earns no extra points.

Prepare the coordinate square

Use a ruler to prepare three 20 cm squares before play. Write TOP along one edge. Name the original corners TL, TR, BL, and BR, meaning top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right. On the top and bottom edges, make tiny ticks at 5, 10, and 15 cm from the left: label them T1, T2, T3 and B1, B2, B3. On the left and right edges, measure downward from the top and label ticks L1, L2, L3 and R1, R2, R3. Keep labels close to their edge. Do not draw interior guide lines.

Read a line precisely

A requested line is the straight segment joining its named endpoints across the original unfolded sheet. “T2 to B2” is the vertical centre line; “TL to BR” is the full diagonal from top-left to bottom-right. Endpoint order makes no difference. A line can run between adjacent edges, as in T2 to R2. TOP always refers to the original label, even when you rotate or turn over the sheet. The descriptive sentence on a card helps you visualize the shape; the four endpoint pairs are the scoring authority.

Plan, then take turns

Select three different patterns and begin with a fresh square for each. Everyone may examine the card and discuss a folding plan. Choose a starting folder, then move clockwise. On your turn, make one straight fold, press it gently along its length, and hand the sheet onward. You may rotate, flip, open, or flatten existing folds freely before or after that action. A pass uses one action. Mark each action on the six-box counter. The group may agree to stop before all six; it must stop after six.

What a folding action allows

Fold one part of the current paper packet across a straight hinge line. You may fold an already folded packet, but every resulting crease visible after unfolding will count. You cannot crumple, roll, tear, cut, wet, glue, draw a target line, or hold a ruler under a fold to manufacture a crease. The ruler may identify your existing edge ticks and later measure results. Work slowly: bending the two desired edge marks together into the same hinge, then pressing between them, can be easier than making a hard crease immediately. Re-pressing an existing crease is free.

Open and inspect

After stopping, unfold the square completely and smooth it lightly. A target earns 1 point when a continuous, reasonably straight crease reaches within 3 mm of both named endpoints. Use the ruler to check a close call. The front or back may show the ridge more clearly; either is valid. Each distinct target can score once. An unmistakable additional crease that runs across the sheet between two boundary points costs 1 point; an accidental small handling wrinkle does not. Score the four targets, subtract extra-line penalties, and raise a negative result to zero.

Worked check and ending

On Four little windows, correct T1–B1, T3–B3, L1–R1, and L3–R3 creases earn 4. If you also made T2–B2 as a guide, that extra full line reduces the score to 3. If instead you omit one required crease and there are no extras, the score is also 3. A misplaced full crease can both miss a target and incur an extra-line penalty. Play three patterns, rotating the first folder, and total 0–12 as one group. Twelve means every pattern matched without extra full lines. There is no individual winner, speed bonus, or tie-break.

Comfort and practical access

A player may give exact folding directions to a partner who handles the paper; that still uses the directing player’s turn. Use larger labelled sheets if needed, scaling both marks and the 3 mm tolerance in the same proportion. Prepare and measure sheets before the session so cutting is never part of a timed turn. Leave planning untimed. If paper tears or becomes unusable accidentally, restart that pattern on a fresh sheet without penalty. These targets are crease constructions, not an assurance that every folding sequence works; a single flat-sheet fold along each requested line is always an available approach.

Printable cards and components

Print single-sided and cut on the borders. Read the setup before sorting the cards; some games use separate card types or fewer copies for smaller groups.
