Round & Revel / I-cut-you-choose
Orchard Shares
Make three tempting bundles, knowing that yours will be the one left behind.
Original authored print-and-play game. Time is a planning estimate; this edition has not had a live group playtest.
Good for: Three friends who enjoy making fair-looking offers with awkward little trade-offs.
What you need
- One copy of 54 fruit cards: 18 PEAR, 18 PLUM and 18 FIG
- Three collection mats, one per player
- One divider marker, paper and a pencil for final scores
How to play
A harvest shared three ways
You are collecting fruit over six harvests. In each harvest one player divides nine face-up cards into three bundles. The other two players choose first, and the divider keeps the bundle nobody selected. Your earlier fruit stays public and changes what you want next. The fruit is fictional; there are no payments, trades or food requirements. Highest final score wins.
Make the orchard
Print one copy of all 54 fruit cards and check eighteen of each name. Copy or print the collection mat three times. Shuffle the entire deck thoroughly and keep it face down. Choose a first divider and put the marker in front of them. Each player begins with no fruit. Keep collected cards in three separate face-up piles on the mat so everyone can count them without asking permission.
Reveal nine
The divider reveals the next nine cards in the center. All nine must be visible before division starts. The divider may inspect every player’s existing collection and move these nine cards around freely while planning. Other players can comment on public totals or request more thinking time, but may not move the offered cards. No one sees future harvests. There is no speed bonus or compulsory timer.
Divide and lock
Make exactly three nonempty bundles, with at most five cards in any bundle. All nine cards must appear exactly once. A legal division might contain one, three and five cards, or three, three and three. Name the bundles A, B and C using their printed mat spaces or scrap labels. Say “locked” when finished. After locking, the divider may not alter a bundle or negotiate a transfer between them.
Choose in order
The player immediately clockwise from the divider takes one entire bundle. The remaining non-divider takes one of the two remaining bundles. The divider takes the last bundle. Nobody can refuse, choose only part, or exchange an earlier collection for something in the center. Add the cards to the matching public fruit piles. The chooser may explain their decision, but does not have to promise anything about a later harvest.
Know the three values
At the end, each PEAR is worth 1 point. Every complete pair of PLUM cards is worth 3 points; one leftover plum is worth zero. FIG cards are worth 2 points each for the first three figs you own, then minus 1 point for every additional fig. Thus zero through six figs score 0, 2, 4, 6, 5, 4 and 3. Further figs keep subtracting one each. A fig subtotal, and even a final score, may be negative.
Why the collection stays
Do not score and clear a mat between harvests. Plums acquired later may complete earlier pairs. An appealing third fig can become an awkward fourth when bundled with something valuable. You cannot discard fruit, give it away, hide a pile or choose not to count it. The deck contains more cards of each kind than any player ideally wants; deciding how to package those unwanted extras is part of dividing.
Pass the divider and finish
Move the divider marker one seat clockwise after each harvest. Play exactly six harvests, using all 54 cards without reshuffling. Every player divides twice, chooses first twice and chooses second twice. After the sixth harvest, count all three fruit piles and calculate the final score. Another player checks the arithmetic. Highest score wins; tied leaders share the win. Fruit counts, division order and fastest decisions never break a tie.
Errors and table talk
If a bundle is illegal before anyone takes it, the divider fixes the division and locks again. If noticed after a choice, return only this harvest’s nine cards and redivide; the same choice order applies and the earlier choices remain known. Correct a wrong fruit-pile placement immediately. If the deck has the wrong counts and past harvests cannot be reconstructed, finish unscored rather than invent extra fruit. Talk about the game freely, but no binding future deals, trades, gifts or personal favors are allowed.
Access and another harvest season
Read all fruit names aloud and use tally marks on the mats when stacks are hard to count. A helper may move exactly the cards a player chooses. For replay, collect every card, verify the counts and reshuffle; each new harvest offers a different division problem. The scoring is intentionally uneven across fruit types. It creates different preferences, rather than claiming each fruit card always has equal value.
A worked example
Before choosing, Mara has 2 pears, 3 plums and 3 figs. Her current score would be 2 + 3 + 6 = 11. A bundle of 1 pear, 1 plum and 2 figs changes her counts to 3, 4 and 5. Her new score would be 3 + 6 + 4 = 13: a gain of 2, even though she took four cards.
A final collection of 7 pears, 8 plums and 3 figs scores 7 + 12 + 6 = 25. A collection with 10 figs has a fig subtotal of 6 − 7 = −1; do not stop that subtotal at zero.
Printable materials
Print the 54 fruit cards once, single-sided, and cut them apart. Print the collection mat three times and leave each mat whole. Copy numbers distinguish physical cards only; they have no scoring value. All harvested fruit and all bundles are public.
