Plan B Parade
Build a plan, reveal the changes, and make four revisions go a long way.
Original printable party game. Timing is a planning estimate; this edition has not had a live group playtest.
Good for: A cooperative game-night group that enjoys adapting a plan.
What you need
- One copy of twelve public module cards
- One copy of eighteen secret change cards, sorted into six three-card packets
- Four labelled plan slots: WELCOME, ROUTE, FEATURE, FAREWELL
- Four revision counters, paper, and pens
- Final-plan appendix kept covered during play
How to play
Keep the parade working
Give your game-night group a shared what-if challenge: create a four-step fictional gathering plan, then repair it as practical conditions change. Your plan uses printed modules, some of which depend on things an earlier step provides. A new restriction can therefore break more than one step. The table shares four revision counters for the entire parade, so thoughtful early choices and small coordinated repairs matter. These counters measure changes to a paper plan; they are not a shopping budget, auction currency, or allocation of real supplies.
Print the components
Print one copy of the twelve PUBLIC MODULE cards and the eighteen SECRET CHANGE cards. Modules come in four steps: WELCOME, ROUTE, FEATURE, and FAREWELL, with three alternatives in each step. Divide change cards into six packets A–F, each containing exactly three cards. Keep the faces hidden. Also prepare four revision counters, four labelled plan slots in that fixed order, and a score record for three parades. Use the module codes as well as their names.
Prepare hidden changes
Choose three different packets without reading their faces, one per parade. Shuffle the three cards within each selected packet and place each packet face down. Keep unused packets out of play. Packet letters help the host sort components; players should not consult the packet solutions while planning. The packet identity is not intended as a secret to deduce. For a first game, simply use A, B, and C. Every supplied packet has at least one complete legal final plan.
Understand requirements and tags
A module may REQUIRE a support word, PROVIDE support words, and USE one or more restricted methods. Requirements must have been provided by a module in an earlier slot. They cannot be supplied by the same module or by a later slot. Support persists through all later steps and is not consumed. A USES tag is different: a restriction banning that tag makes the module unavailable immediately. Printed examples and flavour text never add support words, remove a requirement, or grant an exception.
Build the initial four steps
Lay all twelve modules face up. Together select exactly one WELCOME, one ROUTE, one FEATURE, and one FAREWELL and place them in order. Leave the other eight in a visible reserve. No restrictions apply yet. Check every requirement from left to right before locking the plan. This initial construction is free. Put all four revision counters beside the plan. Choose a captain to record decisions; rotate that job one person clockwise after each change.
Reveal one change
Turn over the top card of the current packet and read it aloud. Its restriction applies immediately and remains active for the rest of this parade. Earlier restrictions remain visible beside it. Everyone may identify a broken module or unsupported requirement before anyone proposes a repair. If the existing plan is already legal, you may keep it unchanged. Do not spend a counter merely because a new card appeared. Give each player a chance to suggest a response or pass.
Spend revisions on replacements
Replacing one module with another from the same step costs one revision counter. Put the removed card back in reserve; it can be chosen again later if legal. You may propose several replacements as one transaction, paying once for every slot changed. Evaluate legality after the entire transaction, so temporary broken dependencies during handling do not matter. The final repaired plan must satisfy every active restriction and every earlier-support requirement. Rearranging slots, borrowing an extra module, and inventing a support word are not allowed.
Commit carefully
Discuss proposed replacements openly, with the captain seeking agreement. If the table cannot agree, each person supports one complete legal proposal; choose the most-supported proposal, with ties settled by the captain. Pay only when the transaction is committed. Tentative comparisons and physically trying a layout are free until the captain says “commit”. Once committed, returning to an earlier choice costs another replacement. You may make a proactive legal replacement, but it spends the same counter as a necessary repair.
Check the checkpoint
After the group commits its response or decides to stop, check the whole plan from left to right. Earn one checkpoint point if it is completely legal. If no affordable repair can be found, earn zero and leave the last plan in place; do not refund earlier revisions. Reveal the next change and continue with any remaining counters. An illegal module provides no support while checking that plan. Complete all three changes, even after a failed checkpoint, so the table can see the final problem.
Finish and reset
After change three, add remaining revision counters as bonus points only if the final plan is completely legal. A parade scores up to seven: three checkpoints and four unspent revisions. Reset all modules, restrictions, and counters before starting the next packet. Across three parades, aim for twelve shared points out of twenty-one. These are suggested targets rather than playtested difficulty claims. There are no individual winners or tie-breakers; equal shared totals remain equal.
A repair example
A plan using W1, R1, F1, and E1 is initially legal. W1 supplies VOICE, which F1 and E1 require. If SOUND is banned, all three of those sound-using modules must be replaced. W3, F3, and E3 form a legal three-revision repair while R1 stays in place. Replacing only W1 with W3 is insufficient: F1 and E1 remain banned and also lose VOICE. A later CHALK ban would require replacing R1 as well.
Access, disputes, and replay
Read all cards aloud and use large written support words; colour is unnecessary. A partner may handle the cards while another person suggests plans. Optional two-minute discussions help pace, but are not scoring conditions. For disputes, audit requirements and USES tags literally in slot order. The appendix gives one legal final plan per packet, not the only permitted path. Replay unused packets for fresh decisions. A familiar packet is an unscored exercise: shuffling its reveal order does not hide its final bans, and a known final plan can be chosen at setup. Do not mix arbitrary changes into a scored packet without first checking that a legal final plan still exists.
