Round & Revel / Timing and coordination

Same Second

No one can see the clock. Can the whole table land in the same moment?

3–10 playersEstimated 10–15 minutes

Original printable party game. Rules and examples checked; estimated timing has not had a live group playtest.

What you need

  • One stopwatch per player, usually the stopwatch in each person’s phone
  • 12 target cards and a score sheet
  • A surface or privacy cover that hides elapsed time while keeping the stop control usable

How to play

The idea

Everyone privately measures the same target duration without looking at a clock. Your table scores for staying near the target and for staying near one another. Mental counting is allowed; audible counts, signals and visible clocks are not. Nobody needs to install an app or share any personal information.

Check the devices first

Each player opens a normal stopwatch, resets it to zero and practises starting and stopping without seeing the elapsed time. You must be able to use the stop control safely without locking the screen or accidentally resetting the result. Cover only the time display with a loose piece of paper, leaving the controls exposed, or angle the display away while keeping a finger over the control. If a device cannot do this reliably, pair its owner with another player as one timing unit. Only the number of timing units matters for scoring.

Choose the deck

Shuffle the 12 target cards and take four. Leave the rest for another game. Choose a caller who also plays and a recorder who also plays. Every timing unit records its own elapsed duration, rounded to the nearest tenth of a second. The caller will say “ready, start” to begin the attempt. Everyone starts their own stopwatch on “start”; small differences in reaction time are part of this casual game because scores use each stopwatch’s elapsed duration, not absolute clock time.

Try one warm-up

Before the scored cards, do a practice attempt at 10 seconds. Start together, silently estimate the duration and press stop when you think 10 seconds have passed. Keep screens hidden and hands still until every unit has stopped. Say “finished” only after your own stop has registered; do not announce a time yet. Once all are finished, reveal the results and discuss how the table might improve. Warm-up results do not score.

Play a target card

Read the target and its two printed tolerances. Reset every stopwatch to zero. After “ready, start,” estimate the target silently and stop when ready. Do not tap a beat, mouth counts to someone else, use music, watch another player’s stopping movement on purpose, or use a second clock. You may close your eyes if comfortable, but it is not required. After stopping, keep your time private until the whole table is finished. Reveal and record all times at once.

Score two different checks

CLOSE TO TARGET earns 1 point if every recorded time falls within the inclusive target interval on the card. TOGETHER earns 1 point if the largest time minus the smallest time is no greater than the printed spread limit. These checks are independent: a tightly grouped table may earn TOGETHER while everyone is far from the target. Maximum is 2 per card. Use the rounded one-decimal values for both checks, so a boundary value exactly equal to a limit qualifies.

A device mistake is a restart

If someone fails to start, accidentally resets, sees their time while still deciding or has a genuine outside interruption, discard that attempt without a score and repeat the same card once everyone is ready. A poor estimate is not a device mistake. If a device keeps failing, combine its player with another unit for the remaining cards. Record the change and treat the session as a relaxed result rather than a comparable score.

Finish and compare kindly

After four cards, total the group’s score out of 8. A suggested aim is 6, but this is an untested house target rather than a validated difficulty rating. There are no individual rankings or loser penalties. Read the fastest and slowest results only to calculate spread, not to single anyone out. Rotate caller and recorder each card. To replay, use four unused cards and keep the number of timing units and tolerances the same if comparing totals.

Example attempt

The card asks for 15 seconds, with an acceptable interval of 12.0–18.0 and a spread of at most 2.0 seconds. The times are 14.2, 15.0, 15.8 and 16.1. All are inside the interval, and 16.1 minus 14.2 is 1.9, so the table scores 2. If the last time were 16.3, the interval check would still pass but the 2.1 spread would lose TOGETHER, for 1 point.

Access and low-device version

For a less exact game, widen every card’s target interval by one second at each end and its spread limit by one second before play. Players may work in pairs with one person deciding when and another operating the control. With only one stopwatch, play in sequence: each person makes a hidden-display attempt at the same target, records it privately, and reveals after everyone has tried. Keep the same two scoring checks, but call this the relay version and do not compare it with simultaneous totals. Timing skill varies; stop any version that feels frustrating.

Printable play cards

Print single-sided and cut on the borders. Read the setup before sorting the cards; some games use separate card types or fewer copies for smaller groups.
