Round & Revel / Cooperative word puzzles
Two-Door Words
Two everyday meanings. One spelling. A fair little hint ladder.
Original printable party game. Timing is a planning estimate; this edition has not had a live group playtest.
Good for: A shared word puzzle with extra clues when the table wants them.
What you need
- One copy of twenty-four public puzzle cards
- Matching private answer-and-hint appendix, kept covered
- Three stage markers labelled 3, 2, and 1
- Paper and pens for candidates and the shared score
- An optional one-minute discussion timer
How to play
One word opens both doors
Bring word-loving friends or family together: each puzzle describes two different meanings of one ordinary English word. Solve the pair together. A keeper has the answer and two fixed hints, so assistance is fair rather than dependent on someone improvising a brilliant clue. You are looking for one spelling, not two rhyming words, a phrase, or a compound assembled from separate answers. Nobody needs a personal anecdote or specialist factual knowledge.
Separate public and private material
Print one copy of the twenty-four PUBLIC PUZZLE cards and the matching PRIVATE KEY appendix. Cut the public cards apart, but keep the keys together in a folded sheet or a separate envelope. Card codes match answer codes. The public card contains only the two doors; its answer must not appear on the back where another solver can see it. Have three small stage markers labelled 3, 2, and 1, plus a shared score record.
Set a session
Play one puzzle per player, with each person keeping once. Shuffle the public cards and take the needed number without looking at their faces. Choose a first keeper, then rotate clockwise. The player immediately clockwise from the keeper is the spokesperson for that puzzle. The keeper privately locates the matching key, checks the spelling and hint order, and places the public puzzle where everyone else can read it. Keepers share the team’s result even though they do not solve their own puzzle.
Read both doors
The keeper reads Door A and Door B exactly as printed. Leave the card visible. Begin on stage 3. Every solver may offer an idea or pass before open discussion begins. Explain how a proposed word fits both meanings; one brilliant fit cannot make up for the other door not opening. The keeper remains neutral: no gestures, stress on a helpful sound, extra examples, spelling mime, or “nearly there”. Asking for either printed definition to be repeated is free.
Agree on one submission
After discussion, the spokesperson says “submit” and gives one word. Before that signal, brainstormed words are not guesses. The spokesperson should seek agreement, but if discussion stalls they choose among the proposed answers after everyone has had a turn. A submission must be one word with one spelling. The group may instead say “hint” to move straight to the next stage without guessing. Suggested thinking time is about one minute per stage, but remove the clock whenever it makes participation harder.
Follow the fixed ladder
A correct stage-3 submission earns three shared points and ends the puzzle. A wrong submission, or a requested hint, moves to stage 2: the keeper reads Hint 1, the number of letters. Discuss and make one new submission. A correct answer now earns two. Another wrong answer or hint request moves to stage 1: read Hint 2, the first and last letters. One final correct submission earns one point. If that fails, reveal the word and score zero. Never skip back to a higher-value stage.
Keep the clue system fair
There are exactly two assistance steps and at most three submitted guesses. No bonus points come from quick answers, and no points are deducted for discussion. Players can correct a mispronunciation before the keeper checks a submission, but cannot replace a checked word for free. A accidentally revealed hint simply advances the stage to that hint’s point value. If the whole answer is accidentally revealed, draw an unused puzzle and restart that keeper’s turn without penalty.
Meaning and spelling disputes
Inflected forms are not substitutes for the printed word unless both doors still explicitly fit that form. For example, a plural object is not automatically an acceptable verb. Accept pronunciation variants when the spelling is the same. If solvers propose a different word they genuinely believe fits both doors, record their two explanations before the keeper responds. After revealing the key, accept it only if everyone, including the keeper, agrees that both printed definitions fit without changing any words. Otherwise discard the puzzle and replace it; do not spend the evening debating a dictionary.
An unscored example
Door A could be “a place where water is drawn from deep underground”, while Door B is “in a satisfactory or successful way”. WELL opens both doors. Its first hint would say four letters; its second would say first W, last L. A group answering after the length hint would earn two points. This example is outside the deck. It demonstrates that the same spelling can have very different grammatical jobs, and that the definition is not necessarily a complete sentence.
End the session
When everyone has kept once, total the shared score. Aim for at least twice the number of puzzles; solving every card before a hint gives three times that number. These are suggested goals, not measured difficulty ratings. Nobody wins individually, and equal table totals remain tied. To compare two tables, use identical puzzles and identical timing rules, with players who have not already seen those answers.
Access and another visit
Read all public text and each earned hint aloud as well as showing it. Solvers may write candidates, and a spokesperson can read another player’s written submission. Give extra time for language learners, or reveal the length before play and make every puzzle worth up to two points. Play the unused cards on a later visit. When designing new cards, choose an ordinary word, write two unambiguous everyday meanings, and verify the letter hints. Do not reuse a known answer in a scored session unless everybody agrees to a relaxed review game.
Printable cards and components
Print single-sided and cut on the borders. Read the setup before sorting the cards; some games use separate card types or fewer copies for smaller groups.
