Round & Revel / Overlapping sequence reconstruction

Ribbon Remnants

Several scraps may be remembering the very same square.

2–6 players cooperating; no non-playing hostEstimated 20–35 minutes for three challenges; not live-playtested

Original authored print-and-play game. Time is a planning estimate; this edition has not had a live group playtest.

Good for: A visual word-pattern table that likes rearranging a small set of paper pieces.

What you need

  • One nine-position ribbon board
  • Four L tokens, three K tokens, and two R tokens; labels are symbols, not initials to decode
  • Practice RR00 and eight fragment cards, pencils, and covered answer guide

How to play

Reconstruct a repeated pattern

A ribbon once had nine symbol positions in one straight row. Five reliable fragments preserve stretches of three consecutive symbols from that ribbon. Rebuild the entire row so that every fragment appears somewhere, while using exactly the stated symbol counts. Symbols repeat, so a promising local fit may be the wrong occurrence. Each supplied challenge has one complete left-to-right ribbon satisfying all its evidence.

Prepare the symbols and board

Draw nine boxes numbered 1–9 from left to right and add a clear LEFT TO RIGHT arrow. Make four tokens labelled L, three labelled K, and two labelled R. L means LEAF, K means KEY, and R means RING; the letters alone are sufficient. Use identical sizes so shape or colour offers no extra information. Keep all nine tokens visible in a waiting area beside the row.

Choose a set of remnants

Work through practice RR00 with its example, then select three different cards RR01–RR08 without opening the answers. Every card states its counts and five fragments. Read each fragment in its printed order. Choose the first restorer and proceed clockwise, preserving the turn rotation when you reset for a new ribbon. Nobody has private information or must remember a covered fragment.

What a fragment promises

A fragment LKR means that somewhere in the final ribbon there are three consecutive positions containing L, then K, then R. No gap is permitted inside a fragment. It may begin in positions 1–7. The ribbon does not loop: position 9 is never next to position 1. You may not reverse, turn over, or rearrange a fragment. KRL is different evidence from LKR even though it uses the same symbols.

Let fragments overlap

Fragments describe the original row; they are not extra tiles to place into separate spaces. Two fragments may share one or two positions, or even be satisfied by the same occurrence when their text permits it. All five must occur at least once, but they do not have to cover all nine positions between them. The final row must still use all nine tokens. Printed fragment order does not imply the order in which they occurred.

Try one careful change

On a turn, place one waiting token into an empty box, move one placed token to an empty box, return one token to the waiting area, or pass. Do not swap two occupied boxes in a single turn; clear one first. Everyone may discuss possible overlaps and take scratch notes. Tell the table which fragment or symbol count motivated the change. Identically labelled tokens are interchangeable, so their individual paper identities do not matter.

Use starts as evidence

A useful deduction is to list possible starting positions for a fragment. Another is to ask which two fragments could overlap without contradicting their shared symbols. You may point to the row and test hypothetical arrangements on paper. Temporary rows can violate clues while you explore; only a locked final row must satisfy everything. There is no move limit, speed bonus, or penalty for changing your mind.

Lock the row and check

When all nine positions are filled, read the row left to right and count four Ls, three Ks, and two Rs. For every fragment, record one starting position where its entire three-symbol sequence appears. Invite each player to check at least one claim or pass. Lock the row and five start positions together before opening the answer. The guide provides an occurrence for each fragment, but a different valid occurrence is acceptable.

Score the reconstruction

Earn 1 shared point if the row has the exact counts and contains at least four of the five fragments. Earn a second point if it contains all five. A row with the wrong count or an empty box earns 0. Play three cards for up to 6 points; there are no individual winners or tiebreakers. Correct a copied fragment before locking without penalty. Use large letters or an aloud reader, and keep the arrow orientation fixed no matter where people sit.

A worked example

Practice RR00 reconstructs as K R K L R L L L K. Its five fragments start at positions 2, 4, 6, 7, 1 in printed fragment order. Count four Ls, three Ks, and two Rs. All five three-symbol stretches occur without wrapping, so this would earn 2 points. Notice that the fragments use shared ribbon positions: you do not need fifteen separate cells for five three-symbol observations.

Printable materials

Print one board and one copy of each fragment card. Cut or copy exactly nine symbol tokens using the inventory. Keep each set of five fragments together; optional cuts must retain its challenge code. Keep the answer guide separate and covered.
